I can say without hesitation that John's is the best pizza in St.Paul. The chinese fire dragon and california dreamer are my favorites, but I have never had a pizza I didn't like there. Brownies are surprisingly good too.

The calzone was the biggest I've seen and at a great price. It's cooked with some garlic butter dough they make themselves every morning. Half of the people in our group couldn't finish it. The toppings and cheese were loaded in it. The owner John takes great pride in making the best food possible, and chatted with us about the menu. Overall, a great lunch experience.

Another LOSER! I phoned an order in for delivery TWO HOURS in advance. At the 2 hour mark when I had no food, I had to call them only to discover that the HIGH SCHOOLERS in charge hadn't even left the place with my food! Asked for the owner and they weren't available, OF COURSE!

John's has a great simple menu, I barely see any fried food. the tater tots which they substitute for the potato chips and have no french fries whatsoever. I really enjoyed the food as well as the quality of food. But for the simple menu, I think the prices are a tad high...

Man o man this pizza was amazing. The aroma of garlic & sauce & toppings hits you as soon as the door is opened. Our group of 6 wasn't quite sure what to order to-go since all of us had a variety of tastes/prefs. The 2 local girls in our group made sure all prefs were taken into consideration - we got a couple of pizzas and breadsticks that covered the gamut. Upon our arrival back at one of the local girl's house, the entire smorgasboard was gone in minutes [so it seemed]. Definitely was some of the best pizza I've ever had [and I'm quite picky about what I eat].

Actually found these guys via Yelp while looking for a different pizza delivery within my area code. Ordered twice from them now, two different pizzas and was not disappointed in either! Only thing I will say is that I haven't been floored by the flavor and for the price, I would like to be wowed a little bit more. Otherwise we've definitely got them on pizza rotation!

We had ordered pizza for our employees from here. Toppings and crust were good and fresh and overall had great flavor. I would order from this place again.

Great menu. Choices for everyone. There pizza is amazing but everything else on the menu is too. My favorite is the chicken Mexican extravaganza with red peppers added. Or the California dreamer with German brat sausage. The Big Kahuna burger is a new menu item that is a great twist on the American burger. This isn't the cheapest pizza in town, but its worth the extra 20% or so. Tip the staff, they do a great job running the place.

Don't get me wrong. The pizza here is amazing. But the problem is you have to deal with their employees to get it. We ordered a pizza and a salad the other night for delivery. Delivery guy forgot the salad. No big deal, unless he begs you not to make him go back and get it. But we did. Then, as he drives away, we open our pizza to figure out it is wrong. Not just a little wrong. But all ingredients are incorrect. Then we look at the receipt. It wasn't even our pizza. So we call them, and they sound really annoyed. They blame the weather. They blame the number of orders. They do everything but apologize for the mistake. The woman on the phone literally told my wife that she would need to ask the owner's wife for permission to void our order. I love their pizza. I mean, I crave the stuff. But the way they treat customers, it will be a long time until I return.

I'm eating da envious turkey sandwich as I type this. This is my first time ordering here as I don't live in the area, I'm just house sitting for a friend. But man oh man am I glad I picked this place. It was ready to pick up when I got there ten minutes after I had ordered. It's stacked high with meat & veggies, it's really flavorful. The tater tots are hot & crispy. I haven't gotten to the dessert yet but the lemon bar I got is a nice size. Overall, a great experience. Only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is because I wasn't given any napkins & I have to use a towel

I've eaten here several times and have never been disappointed. The sauce is how I like it, tomatoey with plenty of garlic and basil. The crust is great too, the "Hand Tossed" is crispy enough to stand up to all the veggies on the Meatless Wonder without getting floppy. I keep saying I'm going to try something else off of their extensive menu, lots of veggie options, but keep getting the pizza. As for the servers I've only been here at lunch but everyone has been friendly. Don't let the fact that they have a TV stop you from eating here, the side room is really a gem, with art on the walls, plants, and a fountain. Easy to converse with your friends. It's a nice alternative to the trendier and crowded pizza chains

We were first time diners, today. Two orders of Chicken Wings and a large pizza, plus a strawberry malt and drinks. The wings were great, service was prompt and friendly. and the pizza was terrific (beef, black olives and pineapple). John, himself, visited our table and made sure we were more than satisfied. We will visit often, and bring our friends.

I consider myself a pizza connoisseur, and I love John's pizza. I have ordered from here approximately once a week for the past year, and I'm rarely disappointed. I have occasionally received a cold pizza, but have always found management to be very helpful in rectifying their errors. The Caesar salad is delicious, and the crust and sauce are amazing. I definitely recommend trying this place if you are in the area.

Finally took out a second mortgage and could afford a John's delivery. Actually, I've had John's a few times, mostly before they moved across the street. Since, they've screwed up an order and once delivered to my house when I ordered to pick up. Value is important when spending money on food. This is a place in which it costs $27 for a 14" pizza and bread side (that apparently comes without a cup of marinara sauce). So, for that money, it should be INCREDIBLE. It's far from it. I'd compare the prices here to Pizza Luce, except Luce at least has creative and interesting pies and far better ingredients. The crust at John's is nothing special. If someone else is paying, and you just have a pepperoni and sausage, it's not bad pizza, but for the price, it's definitely not worth it. The only reason this place is allowed to compete is the lack of pizza in the area. With the loss of Abetto's, there's few options that aren't chains for delivery. Also, baked wings should be banned across America.

Finally a clean, family-friendly restaurant in St. Paul that is affordable with a nice sized menu. Had the Hawaiian pizza and wings. No complaints!

$35 got me a 12" Pan "Denver" (+ bacon) and an antipasto delivered. Everything was fresh when it arrived but salad could've used a larger cup of dressing. This was actually pretty amazing. Delicious sauce, cheese, crust toppings...well, pizza. $35 seems like a lot to spend for a pizza and salad, but two slices and 1/2 a salad filled me up leaving plenty leftovers. Bottom line is there no reason to get pizza from a chain outside of budget, in which case get a hot 'n ready. This was my first time and won't be my last.

Sometimes, you want cheap pizza. So you sacrifice part of your soul and order from Dominos. Sometimes, you want good pizza. So you pay three times the Dominos price and get good pizza. That's made in your neighborhood. And is a local business. So your wallet takes a bigger hit when you want good pizza, but overall, you're a happier person for the decision. And it is in these times that you call John's Pizza Cafe. (Or order online because it's so handy and easy to do.) There is a pizza here that has bratwurst and wild rice! Try it. It works. The Canadian bacon is actual meat, which is not something you can say for the Canadian bacon at every pizza joint. The olives they put on your pizza are legit olives, not those sad things you get in cans. Now, I am a grown woman and I shouldn't admit how happy something like a Mexican pizza can make me, but so help me the Mexican pizza at this place just makes me that happy. So if I like it so much, why four stars? Why not five? Because even though I understand why the prices are kinda high and even though I always find that the pizza is worth it, I'm still a thrifty vixen at heart. And because the pizza is not slap-ya-mama great. But it is really, really good.

Perhaps we should have had the pizza, because the pastas we ordered were, how shall I say this... "pedestrian". I had the "John's Special": sausage, green pepper, and onions on a paperdelle noodle. Noodles were cooked spot on...just right. The vegetables could have used about another minute or so in the pan. The sausage was just plain WRONG. "Italian Sausage" said the menu. No fennel, and a kind of "off" flavor. I asked John (a VERY nice guy!) and he said "I don't like fennel". Sorry... but if you are going to call it ITALIAN sausage it's got to have fennel in it. My wife's ravioli special was good, nothing special... just good. Also, the menu said the dish came with garlic bread. It was plain on the plate. I asked the cashier and she said "Oh, we changed that..." Hey kids, if it's on the menu it better be on my plate! We went there because one of my wife's students was playing a background music gig. The place was TOO LOUD even for a small group. If he's going to have music, he needs some fabric on the wall to smooth things out. And speaking of the walls... they sure could use some art. BORING plane. Probably won't be back. Maybe if I'd had pizza I'd think differently, but with what I had, probably not.

After a few orders from John's I think I'm going to officially throw in the towel. GOOD - Online ordering - Diverse menu of pizza, sauce options, hoagies, pastas and salads - They make their own crusts and breads from scratch - Very friendly delivery drivers MEH - Every hoagie I have tried has been mostly bread and overcooked meat - The 'volcanic' wings are an insult to volcanoes and anyone that likes spicy food - Pizzas, while somewhat original sounding, have been consistently bland I know and respect the fact that places like John's, Savoy's, Little Oven, etc. have a cult following in the Cities, they're just not my cup of koolaid.

I love John's. It is in my neighborhood - thus I want to give it a biased five stars. However, it is a touch more expensive than I'm normally able to pay (and a lot more (way better than) Papa John's). The Pizza is outstanding. I haven't tried anything else on their large menu, but I stand by the pizza as some of the best in that area. I think it would be super cool if they could amp up the place into a sort of Green Mill or Pizza Luce with a bar and happy hour, I would love to hit it up for a beer and a slice to hang out with friends. Alas, it is pretty much best to just get it for delivery or pickup. If you're bored with Domino's, Pizza Hut and Papa John's, you will not be disappointed in the flavor of their pizza, it is awesome. I pretty much docked a point because they're a little spendier and not open very late ... but it is a family joint.

Stopped in one year ago because I love the building. I had a pizza and salad. Skip the salad. Gross lettuce. Their pizza isn't memorable. I don't remember it being horrible but I'm not rushing back. This was a one time visit for me.

I get the impression that the proprietors of this place don't particularly like their customers. The lady that took my order was stern and gave me the impression that I was interfering with some important project she had going. I ordered the Envious Turkey with a side of Tater Tots and a fountain drink. The sandwich was wonderful. The Tater Tots were under cooked and they came with a little bitty cup of ketchup. When I tried to dip the tots in the ketchup they just fell apart. I scraped out as much of the ketchup as I could but there was still only enough to dip 5 or 6 tots and then it ran out. Mind you, I am eating in the restaurant. I approached the lady at the register and she seemed exasperated that I wanted more ketchup. That stuff must be expensive. Oh. I can't forget to note that they had some right wing TV station blaring angry rhetoric through my whole meal. The place has potential but I wouldn't recommend it to someone I liked.

Absolutely love this place. My favorite calzones in the city and the pizza is not bad taboot. The employees are always VERY nice and I've even gone in there 10 minutes to close and they happily prepare a calzone for me. I've worked in the food service industry and I know that's annoying since most of the time you've already cleaned up. But it's much appreciated! The only thing I'd like to see is a larger emphasis on the in-restaurant dining experience. It feels like there isn't any space in there and the poor beer selection doesn't keep me around post-pizza. They don't have a lot of room to work with but if they ever switch locations, this should be in their mind!

    (5)
  • Joe E.

They've added a piece of mesh under their pizzas in the delivery boxes. It keeps the pizza off the cardboard and allows the bottom of the pizza to stay oh so crisp! I feel like since they moved to the new location their crust has really improved and it's baked really evenly. Feels like the toppings go closer to the edge too. Remains a consistent winner in my book! BTW, the reviews of non-pizza items at "John's Pizza Cafe" are funny. To each their own, obviously, and if it's on the menu it's fair game for a review but maybe the takeaway is that if you want pizza, come here, if you don't, don't. I wouldn't know myself because I love the pizza and that's all I ever get. Now I'm off to review a dreadful milkshake I bought at Joe's Fish Cafe.

I've been a John's Pizza Cafe customer and fan since the days when they were Papa John's and located on Como near the railroad tracks. When I eat pizza, which is not often, the Farmer's Fantasy pizza is my choice. Great crust, great sauce, great toppings. Never disappointed. A friend and I stopped in this morning for breakfast. We were the only eat-in patrons. There were 2 take out patrons during the time we were there. You order at the counter, pay, and they bring the food table side. Self service on drinks. Coffee was okay -- hot and tasted fresh brewed. I ordered eggs, toast, and breakfast sausage patties. Friend ordered eggs, potatoes, and toast. Sunnyside up eggs were cooked on too hot a griddle. The undersides were pretty crispy. The overeasy eggs were done perfectly. Potatoes looked like they were hand diced and then deep fried. The toast was crisp, light, and airy. While I considered everything else to be so-so, I do consider the breakfast sausage patties (you get 3 thin patties to an order) to be OUTSTANDING. Well spiced with a little zip. Very nice accompaniment to eggs and toast. And a generous amount of sausage for the price. If I was looking for a quick breakfast, I'd probably go to Coffee Cup. If I was looking for better atmosphere, I'd probably choose Schroeder's. But if I get a hankering for breakfast sausage patties, I'll go back and them to go.

A few people from work ordered from John's to be delivered. The delivery guy called to say he had arrived. I went to greet him and he wasn't there. I called John's to ask where the delivery guy was since he called me saying he was there. I thought maybe he went to another address near by on campus so I took a walk outside to check. No delivery guy. After about 45 minutes I called back. The very unfriendly person on the phone asked if the delivery guy called me back, I said no. (Apparently he tried calling when I was outside looking for him) The person on the phone at John's was rude and chastised me for not sitting by my phone to wait for another phone a call and demanded my cell phone, and that she would "see what she could do about getting our order to me." Being her attitude was lousy I told her forget it. I did call a manager and told her what happened, she did apologize - even though she was not the rude one. And I had to ask about why they charged my debit card even though we did not get our food. The charges were refunded. We ordered LOTS of food, and often from here. But that will change - it only takes one person to ruin it.

Although John's has been on this corner for probably 20 years, I've never stopped until tonight. They recently changed corners within the same intersection, so we wanted to check out the new place. Four of us went in and were surprised by a few things; + Very nice help + Reasonable prices + Very large portions - Fast food type order placement - Sterile decor - Lack of beer One hot hogie - very good One calzone - huge and delicious One stromboli - ditto One small pizza - excellent

You can usually tell how good a place's wings are by their BBQ wings. If their BBQ wings suck the rest of their selection is going to suck. Good thing John's BBQ wings are awesome. Sure, they aren't your BBQ cook-off, your friend's dad is having a get together wings but for restaurant wings? Awesome. Great flavor, drenched in sauce, and you can get a Baker's dozen. Wife and I, after a long shopping trip in the heat, had forgotten to get anything for dinner. Neither of us felt like cooking and decided to get some delivery, something we don't do very often. We drive by John's everyday on the way to work and have been dying to try the place out so we ordered from the website. (Issue with website that is the developer, not the owner's, fault: if you are using a Mac it defaults to the mobile version of the site no matter which browser used.) Got some Italian Fingers, the aforementioned BBQ wings and a split 12" pan pizza (hand tossed). Wife like sauerkraut on her pizza and I like anchovies; John's takes care of those tastes. The sauce on the pizza (and for the fingers) was awesome. Meats tasted fresh (Morelli's?), veggies looked healthy. There was garlic but not an overdose. (I may be Sicilian but I'm not a big fan of garlic.) Everything was top notch and the delivery was faster than anticipated. You aren't going to find a better delivery pizza or wings for the price with the taste of John's. We look forward to ordering more and often in the future, as well as trying out much of the remaining menu.

Best pizza place in the Twin Cities. There is none other like this when it comes to good pizza. I have it delivered at home and we get it at work. Everyone loves it. They are a bit more expensive, but when you eat the pizza you will forget about the price. In December we had a snow fall between 15 and 24 inches, this was the ONLY place delivering. My street had not been plowed, so the delivery guy came up the alley and called me to let me know he was there. THIS is GREAT service!!! The also have pasta, calzones, etc. The saghetti and meatballs was really good, too. If you go to the resturant (new location across the street ... great place), you can get pizza by the slice! If you go to there, parking can be a bit difficult ... esp in the winter with all the snow.

No wonder you will consistently Saint Paul's finest squad cars parked for lunch at this place. We ordered for delivery, and the person who answered was very friendly and got the order right. I almost flying hugged the driver when he came to the door, so in the spirit of full disclosure, we were very hungry. They have a terrific thin crust that is crispy and flaky -- PLUS they offer fresh garlic as a topping. I haven't tried their other fare (sandwiches, etc.) but I would be likely to. I bet they have a meatball sandwich that I will be following up on. If you live in the North End or Como, give it a whirl!

John's has been our spot to order pizza-to-go for years. We usually each order our favorite so we would have leftovers. Mine would be the "Hog in the Bog"... German brat sausage, mushroom and wild rice with cheese and garlic and herb sauce. With the recent move to a bigger space across the street, they have added ample seating and new pasta dishes. On a recent visit, I had a Stromboli that was wonderful. The time before it was Calzone. Fortunately, they also have an ample supply of "to-go" boxes to bring home your leftovers. Of course, sharing would also work... by why? We ordered our first pizza from John's shortly after moving to the neighborhood in 1993 and have never been disappointed. Go there now!

Oh. Mah. Gawd. Becky. This pizza is the best pizza I have ever had. Hands down. My pizza mission is over. I finally found the one. . . (cue music) "I finally found someone, who knocks me off my feet I finally found the one who makes me feel complete It started over coffee, we started out as friends Its funny how from simple things, the best things begin This time is different Its all because of you Its better than it's ever been Cuz we can talk it through My favorite line was can I call you sometime? Its all you had to say To take my breath away This is it Oh, I finally found someone Someone to share my life I finally found the one to be with every night Cause whatever I do Its just got to be you My life has just begun, I finally found someone" Yes, this pizza is so great, that only a snippet of a love ballad by Barbra Streisand will do in order to convey the feelings I'm feeling. I threw a party and my roommate happens to work for John's and brought home some pizzas for all of us to chow on. (don't worry, we paid for them) He made the Veggie 2000 and the Spicy Caribbean Chicken and some other random ones. Daaaaaaaaaaaaamn Gina! They were so so so so so good!!!! There are actually carrots on the Veggie 2000, which I wasn't sure about, but do away with all your skepticism or you will miss out! That pizza is delicious! And the Spicy Caribbean Chicken was quite a delight as well. Yummy in the tummy! I haven't eaten in the restaurant, but I fully intend to make a pilgrimage to the mecca. I gotta get my fix! Seriously, best pizza I've ever had. Ever!!

Ordered it online. Pep and mushroom. Good stuff, and they were on the nose with the delivery. I'll have it again!

**update** Ate here a couple of times after loving the delivery, and I would say it didn't stand out as a pizza place I'd want to frequent. If I'm going out for pie in Saint Paul, I'm heading to Savoy's. But I'll still get John's for delivery. (Ironically, I'm not as big a fan of Savoy's leftovers; much better when it's fresh and at the restaurant... basically the opposite of John's.)

We haven't been to the new location yet, but are really excited to try it out sometime. The old location, directly across the intersection, was funky but hard to maneuver with small children and not much of a seating area. Hence, we hardly ever ate at Papa John's ,but would order take out. John's/ Papa John's has great pizza. They grew their own basil in the basement all year round so you could have fresh pesto on your pizza. How awesome is that? So local, you can taste it. We love all the vegetarian pizzas they offer, especially Farmer's Delight. It's worth working through their menu, one by one.

My entire family invaded this place last night but they handled us well and gave us the "Garden Room" for our party of 23. We actually used to frequent this location in its previous life (Easy Street West) so I was curious to check out the rennovation. Wow! You'd never guess it was the same place. We tried the cheese bread (they charge extra for marinara which is weird. You know we want it, why not just include it?) which was tasty and a BBQ Pulled Pork pizza. Now, our mistake was not noticing that this pizza comes with sweet pickles chopped up on it. Hubs hates pickles in all forms and I really don't care for sweet pickles. Had it been pickle-free, it would have been a pretty good pizza. I also got a bit of the Denver and a Sausage & Green Olive pizzas and both were tasty. Some oddities: the menu doesn't tell you how much it is to build your own pizza. They claim that each topping costs different amounts to add so you never know what you're going to pay. Why not split the difference and charge the same for all toppings? Or divide toppings into categories (Standard and Deluxe) and give prices for each category? We also tried a malt, which was good. No complaints there. We usually go to another pizza place that does combo deals (pizza, bread & a pitcher of pop) and we like it there. I'm glad to have tried Johns but we'll probably go back to our usual place.

I'm a carnivore. My meals seem incomplete without meat. I've eaten it raw. Morning, lunch and dinner. So when I say the Veggie 2000 is my favorite pizza ever, know the magnitude of such a statement! John's pizza showed up at a party I was at earlier this month. I open the top box. It looked scary. I elected to try the slice I had accidentally touched, just to be polite. The mix of brocolli and carrots atop the pizza stimulated my taste buds. I quickly ate up the piece. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Sleep.

Our first time here, with my six-year-old son. The place is just perfect for an informal family dinner. Blues is playing through the sound system. The food is American Italian style pizza, etc. But there are a few vegetarian salad options, too. If you are into this kind of food, you're going to love this place. Finally, it is a neighborhood joint, and that's fantastic. Will come back often.

Quality pizza. Quality toppings, quality service, quality crust. The pre-designed orders are great (for veggie, go for a classic Meatless Wonder); but you can dream up your own, too. This isn't your typical pizza parlor, either. I've never seen Van Gogh on the walls of such a joint, nor have I eaten fresh 'za in the fully natural light of a glassed-in acute triangle (one could even call it an architectural pizza slice) between two semi-busy streets. I will be returning for originality, fast service, and delicious pizza.

We used to like this place. Tonight we ordered the same pizza we always order - half pepperoni, half sausage. Very clear on the phone. When we got the pizza home, it was half mushroom. Nobody in our family likes mushrooms on their pizza.. so we called to say they got the order wrong. The reply was "no, you're wrong". Crappy customer service, arrogant workers. Stay away. At least ask them to read your order back to you twice, and check before you leave.

Quick and delicious! We stopped in for our first John's Pizza Cafe experience on a recent Wednesday night. The Chinese Firecracker Pizza was great! We ordered a medium for the 2 of us and it was perfect. It only took between 10 and 15 minutes for the order to arrive. Chinese Firecracker is pepperoni, pineapple, and banana peppers. I'm not a pepperoni fan, so I 'changed' it to Canadian bacon instead and it was good! I say 'changed' it because when I inquired as to whether I can substitute Canadian bacon for pepperoni, I was informed I can request the pepperoni to be held and the Canadian bacon to be added. That's a substitution in my eyes but the snappy woman behind the counter told me I can change, I can't substitute. She seemed to be bothered we were looking at the menu trying to decide. I guess I would go here for the food, but certainly not friendly service or good atmosphere. Bill was $18 or so for the pizza and a fountain DC.

Ate there for lunch after a day at the como zoo. The pizza was great! I had my kids with and it was SO much better than the pizza ranch we normally have. Staff was super friendly and while they don't have a gluten free menu, was super helpful when trying to figure out what to order. It was a perfect day to enjoy eating on their outdoor tables. Will return, for sure!

I would have to try other things to give them a mere 4 stars. It's such an attractive place and very clean and comfortable from the seating to the temperature of the room. We got a sausage pizza, which was no better or worse than other places. A huge stromboli with pepperoni. I've only ever had it at Cosetta's and that's where I prefer it. They do their own desserts. I was tempted by the cheesecake, but they make it a very strong lemon flavor, and the bottom crust is extremely sweet and gooey. They have a separate room that could be used for parties. A handy well placed soda fountain, adds to the convenient layout of the place. The patio looks really nice and I could see enjoying it sometime. At the counter they also have fresh homemade hoagie rolls for sale. I've been putting off coming here for too long.

Been going here for years, certainly since we moved to this neighborhood in 2000 or so. A little more expensive, but always seemed worth it until today. Got home with a mistaken item on our pizza. Family heard me order it, do don't think I'm wrong. When I called. I was told I was just wrong. No attempt to even be pleasant. If you're going to call yourself "upscale," you also need customer service. Wish I could retract my tip, not planning to patronize in the future.
